Morale and Mindset in Lethal Environments with LtCol Andrew Terrell, USMC
In this episode, listeners will hear a brief, but poignant presentation given by then-Marine Corps Major Andrew Terrell (bio below). This recording took place in Pennsylvania in October 2012 at the first Leadership Under Fire Making Yourself Hard to Kill Conference, which paved the way for future Leadership Under Fire conferences and events. The Survivor Panel which Terrell contributed to showcases, in a human-centric fashion, the personal and professional growth LUF endeavors to facilitate.
In the recording, listeners will also hear the voice of former Fire Engineering Editor in Chief Bobby Halton introducing Terrell. Sadly, Halton passed away in December 2022, but his legacy is that of a passionate fire service leader, mentor and advocate.

Lieutenant Colonel Andrew E. Terrell graduated from Virginia Tech and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in May 2002. He was designated as an Infantry Officer and completed training in March 2003. Andrew joined 1st Battalion, 5th Marines where he deployed three times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, 2004, and 2005. LtCol Terrell was selected for the British Royal Marine Commando exchange program and spent two years with 40 Commando, Royal Marines and deployed to Operation Herrick 7 in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He then assumed command of Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines where he led his company on two deployments to Helmand Province, Afghanistan. In 2012 he joined 4th Reconnaissance Battalion in San Antonio, TX where he served as the Charlie Company Inspector Instructor and the Battalion Operations Officer. He then served assigned as the Commanding Officer of Recruiting Station Detroit for 3 years prior to serving as the Current Operations Officer for the 1st Marine Division for two years. In 2020, LtCol Terrell assumed command of the 1st Battalion of Fifth Marines where he deployed as the Battalion Landing Team commander for the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit in November 2021. LtCol Terrell’s personal awards include the Bronze Star Medal with combat distinguishing device and two gold stars in lieu of 2nd and 3rd awards, the Purple Heart Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and three gold stars, and the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat distinguishing device.
